Most of my friends support them and I normally just hold my tongue and let them support it. It’s whatever I am not going to tell anyone what to believe. But a few minutes ago my friend Kalee sent me the lyrics to one of Envy On The Coasts new songs “The Great American T-Shirt Racket”. The lyrics go as follows:
Oh I’ll be catchin’ stones it’s nothing biblical ‘cause I’d never tell you I’m a man of God and leave you with an out of focus poem but all the kids know ‘cause they’ve been coddled in the cradle of a barely broken home. Are you happy now? You draw a big crowd car wreck without a sound. And Arms like attic doors. Open up, yeah I’d like to join you. You can talk to God and I’ll just watch. Oh, and I’ll just watch.. And he said, “My scars… Now I have a T-Shirt to go with my… My scars… yeah now I have a T-Shirt to go with my…” So… When you cash a cheque, do you let it bleed? Let it breathe, brand it like cattle wearing your marquee. Everyone can see You made an emblem out of “the broken” “the kind of broken” the “I wish I was broken.” ‘other day, found a boy with a long face, ‘said “Sir, I swear, I swear I’m okay..” Don’t need to wish upon the stars.. Now I have a t-shirt, to go with my… scars. Oh, my scars… Now I have a t-shirt, to go with my.. My scars, yeah.. Now I have a t-shirt, to go with my scars.. Are you happy now? Are you happy now? Are you happy now? Oh, You draw a big crowd! You count your money in the dead of the night oh, oh You’ve got your very own heaven sent Jesus Christ. Christ, what’s the hell that make me? parasite, parasite. Write it anywhere that you’d like. “
Kalee told me that our other mutual friend Megan figured out it was about To Write Love On Her Arms. This got me all excited and inspired me to make this post. I got so excited that a band finally had the guts to say something.
On the outside TWLOHA seems like a fantastic charity to support. Teen suicide and cutting is a very serious issue (only about 1,500 teens actually commit suicide a year (between 15-18), only ranking as number 3 top causes of death in teens behind car accidents with around 7,000 a year and homicides with 1,800. From the age ranges of 11-18 theres about 5,000 teen suicides a year. Cutting and other self-injury on the other hand is performed by millions of teenagers daily and will often go without being known.) But, and here is where the giant but comes in, I have been doing some research on To Write Love On Her Arms, and have decided that it’s all just a big facade.
So I started this off by going to www.twloha.com , and the first thing that pops up is “New Lime Colored T-shirt” Okay, this is a good start, you’re telling me to buy your merchandise before I know what you are all about. So their page is some links, some picture telling me to donate, a blog, yadda yadda yadda the typical website. Okay so on the navigation bar the first thing to click is “vision.” I clicked that and it’s basically telling me that “I am loved.” Okay that’s nice twloha, how is that helping me from not committing suicide? Next link, “blog”, Just a person telling me they are excited about new shirts coming out, okay still not helping me. Next link, “news” oh someone was featured in a myspace video, didn’t everyone stop using myspace once facebook came around? Then the “calender” link, okay you are coming to a bunch of colleges to speak, but not my college so this doesn’t matter to me, especially since I don’t know what you are talking about. One of my personal favorite navigation links is next, the “facts” link. Basically telling me how many people are depressed in this world. Okay maybe this would help me feel less lonely in the world but then make me realize how much of a depressing place this world is and just make it worse. Then it gives me facts about depression. That is what WebMD is for. Then it lists different types f self injury,so now you’re giving me new ideas to self injure myself? We’re going to skip the 6th link for now and we’ll discuss it after the final two links. The 7th link is the “move” link telling you where to send your money buy their merchandise and sign up for the street team. The last link is the “store” link where you can buy all their merch that you see everywhere.
So now back to the 6th link on the navigation site. The “Find Help” link, which seems the most important. Let me state the FIRST line that is on this page:
“We are not a 24-hour helpline. We are not trained professionals. TWLOHA hopes to serve as a bridge to help.”
(Hmm. I bet some of you “fans” wearing that TWLOHA shirt because Hayley Williams does did not know this.)
Then it goes on to say if you know someone who is going to hurt themselves call 1-800-suicide (which by the way is not owned my twloha for those of you that did not know that.) Then the rest of that pages just lists other hotline numbers, treatment places and just a bunch of links you can easily find with Google.com.
So, from what I can see just navigating their website, they only seem to sell merchandise and tell people where to go if they self-injure themselves. This seems very odd.
So then I wondered, what do they do with their money that they get donated to them, how much do they get, etc. I then found a very tiny link on the very bottom of the homepage called “Finances” and decided to go through it. It gives you their revenue (money earned) and where it comes from. Then it lists expenses. First I will state their revenue was $1,411,646 for 2008 ($1,183,483 coming from merchandise sales.) The expenses for 2008 ended up being $969,103. This ends up with a net income of $442,543. Hmm, okay i thought your charity was a non profit organization where your money was supposed to go to helping.
The way their expenses are broken up are by “Treatment and Recovery” which is money given to scholarships and organizations. That is only $337, 806 (excuse me if I am wrong though, they make the font so small so people can barely read it.) Then $109,160 goes to “Awareness and Outreach” which are events they hold. $31,635 goes to promotional tools, like their street team and websites (who knew websites could be that expensive!) $61,336 goes to their intern program. Then $239,178 goes to their staff (hmm, I thought it was a non-profit organization.) $90,816 goes to fundraising. $99,816 goes to advertising. So a total of $337,806 out of $1,411,646 ACTUALLY went to helping and preventing suicide and self-injury. Is it me or does something seem completely wrong with these numbers? Especially since they had a left over net income of $442,543. Hm I don’t know. Maybe I am just crazy, or maybe this precious “To Write Love On Her Arms” organization you all love so much maybe might just be playing you all for money. Go back through the Envy On the Coast Lyrics and think a little about what I said, maybe you’ll start to see it too.
I know this is going around everywhere, but it’s definitely worth your time to read this
I knew this was a batshit organization, but now I know why. Thank you.
fucking finally this is getting around.
MOTHER FUCKING THANK YOU. This is a perfect explanation for this useless organization.
